  1. What other dates did the Cretic leave Naples, Italy, and come to Boston,MA? I'm trying to find my grandfather. I have looked, but don't seem to get the info.
    Thanks

The Cretic was in service from approximately 1902 to 1929, so it made numerous trips.

You can find a list of the Naples to New York trips on the Ellis Island web site at this link:

As far as the port of Boston... Ancestry.com would be your best bet for searching those manifests.

  3. My grandfather was on this same ship - same voyage! Date at the top of my copy of the Manifest is 30 Apr 1913, arrival to Boston. Our library offers Ancestry.com for free and that's where I found him. I of course was looking for "Michael" when in fact is was "Michelerugelo".
Just today I finally found my grandmother coming into the country! Ellis Ils.
Is it normal to get emotional when you find remnants of their lives? I start to get teary eyed and feel like I've found a treasure that has been lost. Then I am even more driven to find more!

Cool! What comune was your grandfather from?

Genealogy can be very emotional ... and very addictive ;-)

He was from Melfi. I was never really sure until yesterday if my grandmother was from Melfi or not but it's on her ships manifest, so now I have proof. Oral history says that it was an arranged marriage. She was sent here to meet him. And given a choice, if she liked him they were to marry if she didn't like him she was to go right back to Italy. I have a new and deeper understanding of her now. She took that voyage by herself and endured the herding of Ellis Island Immigration on the off chance that she would find love, family and a good life in America.
I look forward to more postings on your blog.

Agreed - the strength of will of our female ancestors was just incredible. I keep reading these manifests with pages and pages of women traveling alone with five or six children, many under the age of seven and I'm just amazed.

Even the single women who were to be married ... going to a country they didn't know, a language they didn't speak, and sometimes a new husband they'd never even met before. Talk about hope and determination!
