San Rocco Procession North End Boston

Shameful as it is to admit, Ive never been to Boston's San Rocco festival.  Only rarely did we leave the quiet of the Cape, and when we did it was to go to Concord for the 19 April battle of Lexington and Concord reenactment.  I suffered through the military stuff only as I knew the annual tour of  Louisa May Alcott's house would soon follow.

So .. curiosity getting the best of me ... I headed over to YouTube.  Definitely not the same as being there, but it will have to suffice until someone who's experienced it sends me some first-hand memories.

Who has San Rocco festival stories to tell??

1902 Boston San Rocco Festival

Boston Daily Globe 16 August 1902 p.17

"Tomorrow the Italian societies of the North End will celebrate the fest of San Rocco da Montepellier, for whom all Italian people have great devotion, and to whom they appeal in times of pestilence.  The feast  will be observed with religious and civic rites.  At 8 o'clock the societies will assemble at the hall, 117 North st, and at 9 o'clock they will go in procession through the principal streets of the northern part of the city, reaching the church of St Leonard of Port Maurice on Prince st at 10 o'clock.  A solemn high mass will be said there.  Rev Fr Ubaldus, OSF, will be celebrant, with Rev Fr Valerianus, OSF, as deacon, and Rev Fr Wenceslas, OSF, as subdeacon, and Rev Francis Liberti will deliver the sermon.  At 4 o'clock a band concert will be given on the Prince st playground, and at 7 the societies will have a torchlight parade through the principal streets north of Boylston st.  The honorary presidents of the celebration are Dr Errico Scalzilli, Dr Marco Mastrangelo, Arcangelo Marotta, Michele Rocci, Tommaso Nutile, Tommaso Tranfaglia, Giuseppe Scalzilli, Antonio Lemme, Andrea di Pietro.  The committee in charge are Marciano Galante, Michelangelo Calola, Rocco Vincenzo Matelano, Antonio Marciello, Carmine D'Avino, Francesco Pelosi, Ciriaco Morante, Salvatore de Vito."

Not a Torrese in the lot.  They were home lighting candles to San Ciriaco ;-)  Below photo swiped from Florindo's site.... maybe he'll pop in and tell us what year it was taken.

Party At The Todesca House Tonight!

 Boston Evening Globe 3 March 1920 p.11

"Many friends of Mr and Mrs Joseph Todesca gathered at the home of the couple at 105 Walworth st, Roslindale, and tendered them a rousing welcome home reception last evening.  An unusual program of entertainment was carried out (brother Ralph rode the unicycle on the dining room table) and supper was served.  Mr and Mrs Todesca returned on the Canopic yesterday after a five months' stay at Avellino, Italy.  They are well known in Roslindale, where Mr Todesca is a local contractor."

1905 Boston Daily Globe - Joseph Todesca Purchases Land

 Boston Daily Globe 8 March 1905 p.3

"West Roxbury District

Papers have also passed the registry of deeds transferring from Francis G. Gibbs a lot of vacant land containing 6600 square feet, and situated on Bellevue av, the purchasers being Joseph Todesca and wife, who will erect a frame house for their own occupancy.  This lot is assessed for three cents per square foot, and was sold for a figure above this."
