Six retired Italian Floridian fellows were playing poker in the condo clubhouse when Guido loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table.

Showing respect for their fallen comrade, the other five continue playing, but standing up.

At the end of the game, Giovanni looks around and asks, "So, who's gonna' tell his wife?"

They cut the cards. Pasquale picks the low card and has to carry the news.

They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse.

"Discreet? I'm the most discreet person you'll ever meet. Discretion is my middle name. Leave it to me!"

So, Pasquale goes over to the Guido's condo and knocks on the door.

The wife answers through the door and asks what he wants? Pasquale declares: "Your husband just lost $500 in a poker game and is afraid to come home."

"Tell him to drop dead!" yells the wife. "I'll go tell him." says Pasquale.

1940 Census Update

At a recent meeting of our genealocial society, one of our members wanted to know if you could purchase your own copy of the 1940 census when it is released next year. Nobody had an answer. However, I found the answer today and thought I'd pass it on to you. I will not be purchasing it; I'll wait until it's online.

The following was published by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration:

The National Archives Trust Fund is taking pre-orders for the 1940 Census data and enumeration district maps on hard-drives and hard-drive arrays. We will also be offering microfilm copies, starting April 2, 2012, of the 1940 Census data and enumeration district maps.It is important to note that the National Archives and Records Administration will also be hosting all 18+ terabytes of data online, free of charge, for viewing and download. You can purchase the entire set for "only" $200,000 in digital form. If you prefer microfilm, it will set you back $580,750. However, you can purchase individuals states for much less.

Two days ago I featured Carmine Antonio Fierimonte from an entry in the book, Leading Americans of Italian Descent in Massachusetts.
It states that he was born 1 Sep 1886 in Montemiletto, Italy. I believe the correct date is 1 Sep 1884 as indicated in the above documents. I also have his passport application with the same date.

It also states that he married Marinetta Bevilacqua of Malden, June 13, 1913. I do not believe the location is correct. I have not been able to find a marriage record or index between the years of 1910 to 1915 in Massachusetts to prove that statement.

1940 Census Records Free to the Public

Archives.com Parent Company Inflection Awarded Project to Make 1940 Census Records Free to the Public:

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov. 17, 2011 -- Archives.com, the website that makes discovering your family history simple and affordable, has joined in partnership with the National Archives of the United States to provide the public with free digital access to the 1940 Federal Population Census beginning on April 2, 2012. In close collaboration with the National Archives, Archives.com will build a website for researchers to browse, view, and download images from the 1940 Census, the most important collection of newly released U.S. genealogy records in a decade.
Archives.com is pleased to contribute to this momentous project, allowing researchers to digitally access the latest release of the U.S. Federal Population Census, the ultimate resource for family historians, at no cost. Census day occurred April 1, 1940 and due to the 72-year privacy restriction these records will be available to the public for the first time in 2012.

CEO Matthew Monahan said, "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in this historic moment and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the advancement of online genealogy research. Access to 1940 Census records will allow researchers to discover new family members and previously unknown connections to the past. We're happy to have the opportunity to facilitate the discovery of these records, which document over 130 million U.S. residents, more than any previous U.S. Census."

The 1940 Census will be available to the public April 2, 2012 at 9:00 AM (Eastern Daylight Time) on a new website created in collaboration between Archives.com and the National Archives. The collection will consist of 3.8 million images that the National Archives scanned from over four thousand rolls of microfilm. Public access to the images will not require payment or registration, and will be available to any person with internet access. The name and web address of the website will be announced at a later date.

Chief Digital Access Strategist for the National Archives Pamela Wright notes, "The importance of the 1940 Census cannot be underestimated. At the National Archives, we have been preparing for the launch of these records for years. We are working closely with Inflection to ensure researchers will be able to search the 1940 Census when it opens next year." At launch, researchers will be able to search the 1940 Census by address, Enumeration District (ED), and geographic location. Researchers will be able to browse images by ED number directly, or use address or geographic information to locate the appropriate census schedule.

The Villages Genealogical Society Meeting

At our meeting held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, our guest speaker was Ann Staley from Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville is about 125 miles north of The Villages. Her presentation was "So You Can't Read a Foreign Language: Deciphering Vital Records - Tips & Techniques."

She offered several tips on how to decipher vital records but the bottom line is, if you can't speak or read the language, it is going to take work on your part. However, with the right training aides, it can be done. Of course you can always hire someone to do the translating for you but that would be expensive especially if you had a lot of records.

There are five training courses on the familysearch.org web site for Italian genealogy. This is her best recommendation as a starting point to obtain some training in trying to teach yourself how to decipher those records. Here are the links for the familyserach.org Italian training courses.

FSGS Report

This past weekend I attended the Florida State Genealogical Society Conference in Maitland, Florida. Maitland is just outside of Orlando in central Florida. The conference, held at the Sheraton Orlando North Hotel, was well attended with about 200 attendees. Lloyd de Witt Bockstruck was the keynote speaker and he presented four sessions. Being a bit of a history buff, I enjoyed his War of 1812 session the most. There is a wealth of information about the men who served during that conflict but most records have not been digitized. His presentations were well presented; he was well prepared, knowledgeable and very witty.

Between his sessions there were breakout sessions with other speakers. It was difficult to pick which to attend since there were 3 or 4 going on at the same. I attended” Effective Websites for Genealogical Societies” with Tom Ryder since I maintain our society’s internet presence. I also attended Social Networking for Genealogical Researches with Drew Smith. He’s a national speaker and does a weekly podcast with George Morgan. Also, I attended “Putting your family tree online” with Donna Moughty. As you can see, they were all mostly technology orientated. Even though I know how to do all of these things, if you don’t stay current with technology it just seems to pass you by making everything more difficult to accomplish.

The highlight, at least for me, was when I was awarded the Genealogy Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the FSGS at the Friday evening banquet. I was nominated by The Villages Genealogical Society. The nomination read in part … “he has volunteered constantly whenever needed since joining the society. As our membership grew from 100 in 2006 to over 500 in 2011, he wrote a program to handle the membership activity and create needed reports. Besides being the Treasurer, webmaster and newsletter editor, he also serves as our All-Day Family History Seminar Chairman, which occurs every February. He is the VGS’s “go to guy” and so greatly appreciated.”

That small acknowledgement was very much appreciated but I must end this report now since I have to teach Legacy Family Tree software this morning and Family Tree Maker this afternoon and the monthly newsletter goes out this evening.

Fountain for the Old Home In Italy

A mile long acqueduct and a beautiful stone fountain are the gifts which Boston Italians coming from the town of Torre Le Nocelle are making to their birthplace. The aqueduct and several smaller fountains are already complete and the big fountain, which is to adorn the center square of the town, is now set up at 158 Orleans st, East Boston, and will be sent to Italy about the middle of the month.
The architect of the fountain, chosen in competition, was Edward Ardolino, and it was C.C. Ardolino who went to Italy to construct the acqueduct. The fountain is 23 feet high and about 12 feet in diameter. Its construction required four carloads of stone, donated by Norcross Bros Company.
The fountain has a base 24 feet in diameter and is set on a platform two feet above the grade line. It is square in shape, with four entrances, each having three steps. The bowl, 12 feet in diameter, has eight sprinklers, of which four are for drinking purposes and four for home use.
On top of the bowl is a large rock about nine feet high and 7½ feet wide, decorated with four dolphins, emblems of love and kindness, each with a two inch pipe in its mouth, through which issues water for home use. On each of the four elevations of the rock is a cartouche, later to be inscribed, and on the front elevation is a clock, decorated with oak and laurel.
Above the rock is a base holding a four foot tower representing the town of Torre.
