The Family of Emidio Luongo and Carmela Paolucci

(L) Emidio Luongo (R) Great-great grandson Anthony Cirella.
How cute is the hat and that big ear-to-ear grin?!

Our recent blog post on Emidio Luongo inspired Joyce Luongo to get in touch with us ... and I'm so glad she did!  Joyce is the wife of Emidio (Nick) Luongo, son of Emidio Sr.  She was kind enough to share these beautiful photos with us, as well as some family stories.  Below are Emidio, wife Carmela (nee Paolucci) and their children.

1. Carmela Paolucci Luongo
2. Emidio "Dominic" Luongo, aka "The Kaiser." (Joyce tells me Emidio was such a hard worker that the family wondered if he ever slept.)
3. Genoveffa "Lolly" Luongo
4. Emidio "Nick" Luongo
5. James Luongo
6. Regina Luongo (School teacher)
7. Giulia Luongo (Hell-raiser supreme - could run faster than The Kaiser, thus avoiding the "lesson cuffs"... go Giulia!)
8.  Emma Luongo (Another hell-raiser)
9. Georgio Luongo (Retired equipment manager for the New England Patriots, currently living in Westwood MA)
10. Ernesto Luongo (Died 1994 - son Ernesto Jr. was killed in the service in 1965 when a C-133 he was working on slipped off its jack and crushed him.)

And standing on the right side in this next photo is Giovanni Luongo, oldest son of Emidio and Carmela.  Giovanni was killed in a car accident in the 1930's.

From Florindo's World War I draft registration I learned that he was residing at 531 N. Homewood Ave. in Pittsburgh, PA and working as a waiter at the Hotel McCarthy ... same address.

WWI Draft Registration

The 1920 federal census shows the newly married Florindo living with his brother Michele and family at 5117 Fleury Way in Pittsburgh.

By 1930 the family has grown by four children and a maid, and has relocated  to 2326 Susquehanna St. where Florindo is now proprietor of his own restaurant. (Go, Florindo!) Also living with them is brother Luis Capone who is working at the restaurant as a waiter.

Next up is his World War II draft registration which lists the location of Florindo's restaurant at none other than 531 Homewood Ave.... the very place where he started his American journey as a waiter.  The great American dream ... accomplished.

 WWII Draft Registration

Children of Florindo and Rachele (surname possibly di Sessa):  Carmen (abt. 1922), Joseph (abt. 1923), Valentino (abt. 1927) and Virginia (abt. 1928).  Florindo died in December 1978 in Pittsburgh. Below is the building where the restaurant used to be.

Italian Intervention Required

It's become apparent that our dear cugino Florindo has developed an unhealthy addiction to coconuts.

Would any of you gentlemen like to volunteer to fly over and nurse him through the ... ahem ... the withdrawal process?

Hmmm ... handsome gent on the left.  Never mind ... I'll go ;-)  Meet you in Torre, ladies.

"The Portsmouth Herald" 26 October 1954

Hokay, so these don't have a darned thing to do with Torre, but I DID stumble upon them while researching our Torresi.  Got a kick out of them, so figured I'd share ;-)  All are from page six of "The Portsmouth Herald", Portsmouth, NH.

Could someone please explain to me exactly how a woman was supposed to hide this in her hair?

Petition For Naturalization: Ludovico Frongillo (1879)

Petition for Naturalization Index

Ludovico Froncillo was born in Torre le Nocelle on 1 October 1879 to Carmine Alessandro Froncillo and Maria Concetta Pizzano.  The spelling of the Froncillo surname is one of those that's a bit funky.  For the most part it's spelled with the "G" in the States and the "C" in Italy ... although there were exceptions in both cases.

Thanks to John D. for sharing Ludovico's naturalization info and ship manifest with us :-)

Ludovico made at least four other crossings, but I think this Duilio manifest was the last one.

Written by Joseph William Carlevale and published in 1946 by The Memorial Press in Plymouth, MA.  Copies can be ordered online at the Quintin Publications site.  If you have an Ancestry.com account you can also find it in their database of records.

A terrific resource for those with ancestors who settled in the Boston area.  I'm not sure how accurate they are as I've noticed a few discrepancies in dates for our Torre ancestors ... but it's still a very interesting read.  Keep checking back as I'm scanning it for everyone from Avellino and will be posting links to the corresponding pages.

Passport Application: Nicola de Minico (1902)

Nicola de Minico 1923

This one is an interesting contradiction of names and dates ....

Nicola was born in Boston on 12 September 1902 (or 1903 - take your pick) to Carmine de Minico and Maria Carmina (Carmela) de Carro of Torre le Nocelle. Apparently Nicola's birth was never registered with the city of Boston and it was necessary for him to supply alternate means of identification to receive his U.S. passport so he could return to the States.

At the time it must have been aggravating for Nicola, but it turns out to be a  bonus for us ... as we now have a copy of his baptismal certificate ;-)
